Instrumentation
A mildly successful work for a moderately strange ensemble, Passacaglia begins with a choral passage in the vibraphone. The player is instructed to use the instrument’s motor, which creates a pleasant throbbing vibrato effect. This opening statement forms the basis for much of the pitch material in the work. The work proceeds through a series of variations of growing textural density. Two jarring modulations mark the climax and coda of the work.
