DZ4 was written at the request of close friend and colleague Alicia Lee. A member of the experimental woodwind quartet “DZ4,” she approached me to participate in a concert titled “one hot minute” featuring dozens of premieres for her ensemble. The only stipulation being that the work had to be approximately one minute in length. My work came in at around 90 seconds, and is a strange combination of serialism, bebop, and twisted echoes of coplandesque-americana.
